The recommendations for PAP smears developed long before the relationship to some strains of HPV and cervical cancer were known. HPV high risk accounts for 97% or more of cervical cancer. You are negative for any strains. If you were + for high-risk strains they would test more often with ASCUS, without, a year is fine. The safety of this comes from decades of screening millions of women.
