Good morning doctors. i have been on losartan for a long time. my blood pressure was 180/80, and my cardiologist is considering changing me to losartan with diuretic added. what tests will the cardiologist be doing o decide which medication is better?

There is no indication for any test when your cardiologist decides to change losartan to losartan-hctz. However, with that high systolic pressure, adding a thiazide diuretic may not be enough for lowering systolic pressure below 130. A basic metabolic panel for checking renal function and electrolytes is indicated after 2-4 weeks of the change, a mild increase in creatinine will be expected.

She/ he will just monitor your BP after placing you on the diuretic. Might also do an SMA12 to check electrolytes and kidney function.
