A member asked:

Hi doctors. my internist wants me to change from losartan to losartan with diuretic added, as blood pressure reading was 180/80 in his office. i may need a medication to help with very frequent urination especially at night. what can i do about these?

Discuss alternative meds as a diuretic will cause frequency. Taking another medication to reduce frequency will defeat the purpose of a diuretic. Discuss your treatment choices thoroly with your MD. Also make changes in diet specially salt. Good luck

Losartan Hctz does not cause nocturia (voiding a lot at night) if you take this medication one a day in the morning. You have nocturia because of other reasons which could be high fluid intake after dinner time or prostate problem or overactive bladder on top of insomnia or chronic kidney disease. I want to reemphasize that diuretic, taken in AM, is not the cause of frequent voiding at night.

The diuretic combined with losartan is a long acting one that creates more of a slow steady excretion of salt & water & doesn't tend to promote sudden bursts of urine like lasix would. I often found that losartan has to be given twice a day for efficacy in treating hypertension.
