Nerve dysfunction: hot/cold and pins/needles sensations are controlled by nerves in the skin. A variety of underlying issues can cause this sensation. Alcohol related neuropathy, diabetes, hormonal changes, nerve damage, and MS. It might be wise to see a DR for a full workup. Keep a diary of when it happens and anything that was going on at that time: Diet, exercise, period, sleep, anxiety, alcohol/drug consumption.

Paresthesia: A pins and needles feeling as you described can be caused by many different factors, but pressure on the superior alveolar nerve is my first suspicion. Sinus pressure or a subclinical dental infection may be the culprit among other things. Please see a dentist to rule out any dental issues, then see your physician.
