I have an infection caused by a carious exposure during a filling. i need a root canal but the infection/swelling has caused lockjaw & i cant open my mouth for dentist to get in there. he rx steroids to help. anything else i can do to help it?

You appear to be suffering from trismus, which is the sustained spasm of the jaw muscles. Besides antibiotics for the infection, massaging the area and warm, moist compresses can alleviate the condition. ref: internet search: trismus for more information

Yes your Dentist must have Rx for Antibiotic depending on your allergy to Penicillin. May be you did not pick up from the pharmacy . He also must have prescribed pain medication depending your health history .I suggest to contact your Dentist and stay away from any hot liquid in your mouth .
