You're right!: I often recommend the use of a gum stimulator. When used properly, i find that in those patients the gums are less puffy, tougher and firmer and less prone to inflammation. Basically, it is similar to the tougher skin on the palms of your hands rather than the backside due to the constant stimulation and use. One still needs to brush and floss properly and often enough.

Rarely needed.: Proper brushing and flossing will be sufficient to have firm gum. Gingival inflammation will result in roll, round, bulbous gum tissue. Eliminate food impaction areas such as open crown margin, small gap between teeth), uneven clinical crown (stair step occlusal plane). Poor occlusion area such as crossbite, balancing & working interference will also cause localized bone loss and inflamed gum.
