Should be treated: Antibiotics only may reduce the symptoms, but do not treat the cause of your abscess. You need to see your periodontist to treat the cause of the abscess. They will determine the appropriate treatment plan for your exact problem. .

Type of antibiotic: The resolve of the gum abscess inflammation may indicate a need for different antibiotics. If the abscess is due to a tooth (endodontics), Clindamycin or the antibiotic that can penetrate into bone should be used. If the abscess is more of soft tissue or gum, then amoxicillin/metronidazole combination or alone should be used. Treatment must be carried out to eliminate the cause when using drugs.
