Don't be: The periodontist will most likely examine your mouth, take some x-rays and discuss before doing anything, what is wrong and what needs to be done. He\she will probably make the area completely numb so that you don't feel anything, clean it out gently, and place you on antibiotics. Ask all the questions you want so that you will be comfortable about the procedure beforehand. You'll be fine!

Don't worry!: Typically the pus pocket will be incised and drained (you will be numb for this, so it doesn't hurt at all!) and an antibiotic prescribed to fight the remaining infection. This is "aacute care" in that it brings the problem under control but does not necessarily treat the cause. Your periodiontist will talk to you about what treatment may be needed to solve the problem for a longer time.

No problem: Your periodontist will treated the gum absess with a drainage procedure which may require a microsize cut and debridement. Local anesthesia probably will be provided. There should be minimal pain or none postoperative.
