Maybe: It could be that the infection is cleared up enough so that by careful home care you can resolve the rest of the problem. However if there is alot pus and redness in the gum you may need more or another antibiotic.

Procedure needed?: Periodontal (gum) abscesses usually require a procedure (root planing) to treat, as well as an antibiotic. The debris in the periodontal 'pocket' must be removed to have a successful outcome. If an exudate is truly pus, the infection is still in existence.

Trust him: Antimicrobial therapy should be done after the debridement. If given before, it is meant to reduce the bleeding and pain during debridment, not to eliminate the symptoms. Antibiotics given before the treatment may lead to more serious abcess and harder to access for cleaning due to tightening of the gingival cuff surrounding the tooth.

Ok: Antibiotics are a help but often will not clear a localized gum abscess. Make sure you contact your periodontist and find out what is causing the abscess. Local treatment is often needed or other related dental treatment such as root canal therapy or even extractions. Abscesses need to be treated asap.
