Plaque causes spots: Braces do not cause white spots, but failure to carefully remove plaque during orthodontic treatment does. The white spots represent areas of tooth decalcification that identify where plaque was permitted to accumulate for days without proper removal. These spots can be completely avoided by practicing excellent and effective oral hygiene throughout orthodontic treatment.

Up to you: White spots are caused by bacteria turning food into acid which then etches calcium out of your tooth enamel. See a fully qualified Orthodontic Specialist. Follow the Orthodontist's cleaning instructions to the letter and you should be OK.

Not uncommon: The white spots are caused by plaque buildup on the teeth, which causes loss of hard minerals and decay. Brushing twice daily, and flossing daily prevents buildup and avoids white spots complications.
