Likely: Type i diabetes is also referred to as juvenile, or Insulin dependent diabetes, and your body is actually deficient in insulin. Your blood sugar control as well as your prognosis will be better if you take insulin. Discuss with your doctor.

Autoimmune?: Patients with type 1 diabetes have no ability to make insulin. Despite diet, these patients die without insulin. I suspect you're type 2, but Insulin dependent. Great that things are better with diet and exercise. However, only your doctor can tell you if you need medication control as your medical records are not available to health tap.

Not necessarily: I agree with dr. Lewy-weiss that you probably don't have type 1 or you would not be able to control it without insulin! congratulations on your diet & exercise program. If you are keeping it down with this you don't need insulin. Consider trying a raw vegan diet- see http://www.Naturalnews.Com/028341_diabetes_living_foods.Html also see http://spectrum.Diabetesjournals.Org/content/22/4/206.Full.
