Long term use of PPIs does not cause cancer. Yet they have some harmful effects such as Vitamin-B-12 deficiency. Patients may also develop low calcium levels and rarely cause bone fractures. So their use should be limited to lower doses(20mg instead of 40mg pills). In most patients acidity is controlled for 2 days, so an alternate day schedule may serve the purpose once endoscopy reveals no ulcers

No immediate link has been established between PPI’s and cancers. There is increasing evidence for long term use side effects, such as malabsorption for example and tapering/ discontinuing them becomes difficult due to rebound acidity. Working closely with your gastroenterologist may help.
