More and more described, PPI’s are becoming increasingly hard to wean, specifically in patients with severe hyperacidity/ reflux symptoms. They are not known to be linked to increased risk for cancer though, but rather a variety of chronic conditions related to chronic acid suppression. Your best reference remains your gastroenterologist who might be able to taper slowly doses/ rotate PPI’s.

You are correct in being concerned about prolonged taking of ppi's. Concerns include kidney disease, dementia,B12 deficiency, susceptibility to fractures & C diff intestinal infections. Consider switching to a different class of acid blockers such as famotidine. which is better tolerated in younger versus elderly people after long-term use. Your gastroenterologist can also advise you.
