A 49-year-old female asked:
What medical or blood test can help determine cause of chronic insomnia, inability to fall asleep lasting for a year? drugs don't work anymore and can this kill a person who can not sleep? what could cause inability to fall asleep even when tired?

You need to see a specialist in sleep therapy.

In most cases, blood testing, even genetic HLA profiles do not diagnose insomnia. Would advise an overnight sleep study to exclude such problems as sleep apnea. Do agree that a sleep specialist could be very valuable. A large problem maybe the prior use of sleep medications, which develop tolerance and make the longterm situation far worse.
