Uncommon Insomnia: You require a check up with your primary md first to eliminate the "medical" causes of insomnia and ask about family history. If necessary sleep logs, diaries and questionnaires would be the next step. Treatment can begin without the need for a formal sleep study if done properly. Your md will determine if a consulkt with a sleep specialist would be useful.

Very unlikely: Sporadic fatal insomnia exists, yet is a very unlikely cause for your problems. We on healthtap cannot diagnose you because we have not examined you. We have shared information & suggested that you see your own physicians who can personally examine and work with you. Consultations with neurologists, psychiatrists, and/or sleep medicine physicians may help, but you do need a primary care doctor.
