It depends: If it is related to a gum infection then a mouth rinse would help as well. But oral antibiotics rarely do the trick by themselves. But if the infection comes from the root of the tooth, then a root canal might be needed.

Abcess: This sounds like a periodontal (gum) abcess. If so, drainage and antibiotics will help heal. Periodontal abcesses usually occur from food impaction or popcorn husks. If the area does not heal it needs to be re-evaluated for an infected tooth which would require a root canal, or existing periodontal disease which will allow continual food impaction unless treated.
