Good oral hygiene: Daily flossing, brushing at least twice daily for three minutes each time, xylitol gum or mints three times a day for 5 minutes or more each time, at least rinsing after meals or snacks or drinks other than water. Visit your general dentist at least every six months.

See a dentist: See a dentist & get a baseline evaluation for the state of health you are in now. Build on that baseline & eliminate any advancing problems. Learn how to be preventative minded toward the health of your teeth & gums. Learn how to be an expert on cleaning your teeth at home. After all they are your teeth to keep for your lfetime.

Easy: Cut down on sweets and carbohydrates. Brush thoroughly 2-3 times per day with a Fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, use a good quality oral rinse such as listerine once per day, see the dentist every 6 months. Brush your tongue daily to reduce oral bacteria. Replace your toothbrush with a new one every 3 months. This is an easy formula for optimum oral health.

Good hygiene: Flossing and correct brushing with minimal intake of citric acids and sugars coupled with professional prophylaxis should do the trick.

Regular dental care: In addition to dr. Lockhart's answer, seeing a dentist regularly will help to avoid potential problems when they can be diagnosed early. Active decay in teeth can potentially become root canals or one may lose the tooth if not treated. Having regular hygiene visits can maintain a decline in periodontal health and bone loss, thereby helping you to keep your teeth for a lifetime.

Yes: A professional cleaning, scaling and evaluation are critical to dealing with plaque. Proper home care instructions and cooperation will be the next step in moving forward.
