Also: In the case of dementia, cognitive exercises like playing chess, doing crosswords and listening to classical music have been shown helpful. Other mental exercises like envisioning a potentially stressful situation and going though what you will do in your mind beforehand also can be helpful. Cognitive techniques that involve how you think about things also can work well for many problems.

A gentle Balance.: Although some forms of mental exercising may offer some help, there is a lot more to it than just that. Do things that positively impact other people, exercise, maintain good nutrition, practice self discipline and generally improve you relationship with the world. This will prove to be more beneficial than mastering an easily learned exercise or two.
