See your doctor: Anxiety disorder can be treated with SSRIs like citalopram, lexapro, zoloft. These medications are not addictive. There is also Buspar (buspirone) for anxiety and some other off-label medications that can be used. Avoid xanax if possible.

The best thing is: psychotherapy. If you have serious anxiety, various kinds of psychotherapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy, can be effective in treating anxiety without having to take ANY medication. SSRI/SNRI antidepressants do not produce dependence (although there is a discontinuation syndrome possible and they shouldnt be stopped suddenly). Buspirone may also help. All of these take weeks to work.
