No effect: The infection is inside the bone and soft tissue, somewhere where the salt water will not reach. Are you under the care of a dentist? If not, please be seen ASAP. Antibiotics may not be enough... the abscess may need to be drained to accelerate the healing process. If you are self medicating, please understand that the antibiotics you are taking may not be effective for your infection.

: A perapical dental abscess may have an associated boil like swelling of the gum. Also, if you gently tap the tooth with a spoon it'll cause tooth discomfort. Cough,phlegm,nasal congestion are not characteristic of a dental abscess.

See a dentist: The best way is to take care of the problem causing the abcess with either an extraction or root canal.  Some times the abcess can be incised and allowed to drain which helps the healing progress much faster. To help with the symptoms, antibiotics, ice pack and then get to your dentist.

if penicillin isn't helping you need to see your dentist to eliminate the cause and perhaps you will need a different antibiotic
dont leave it. Eliminate the cause of the abscess.

i started amoxicillin yesterday for a dental abscess and i woke up with some pain, no fever but, i have some pretty large swelling in my lower jawline and right side of chin. do i need to go to the er for this?
