A member asked:

Since a sinus infection & a dental abscess can both cause pain & swelling in the same area of your face (near the nose/cheeks) how can you tell the difference? can an abscess cause phlegm, cough or stuffy/dry nasal passages?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

A perapical dental abscess may have an associated boil like swelling of the gum. Also, if you gently tap the tooth with a spoon it'll cause tooth discomfort. Cough, phlegm, nasal congestion are not characteristic of a dental abscess.
