Antibiotics -tooth: Penicillin is the most specific for most tooth pain, swelling, fever related to abscessed teeth- this is what is called a gram positive bacteria. Some times we wait too long to get into the dentist and there may be either changes to the bacteria causing the infection or additional bacteria can arrive that are gram negative bacteria- then we need a different antibiotic to help fight the infection.

Options: The dentist who is treating you needs to be advised about what is going on. It may mean an increase in dosage or frequency, a change in antibiotics, incision and drainage, need for surgery, removal of tooth or a combination of some of these measures. This is not something that we can diagnose over the internet. Perhaps a second opinion is warranted.
