Recently cleared to bear weight after 5th metatarsal avulsion fx. bit of discomfort walking and a lot of ankle pain. is this normal?

Yes: If you have been immobilized for a while it is not uncommon to have some discomfort and stiffness. It should gradually get better if it doesn't or it gets worse you need to be reexamined.

No: The ankle pain may be coming from the tendon that attaches to the 5th base called the peroneus brevis. Have it checked out, you may need an ankle brace for a couple of months.
