Not necessarily: Sometimes the bite of the teeth are fine and only a chin implant is needed. Other times both have to be addressed. Too many times plastic surgeons just address the chin and fail to recognize the importance of the tooth alignment. Form and function ought to go together!

No: A chin implant and orthognathic surgery are two totally different operations. Orthognathic surgery moves the jaw and teeth, and is used to correct your bite and to treat sleep apnea. I recommend chin implants for older patients with weak chins and a normal bite. For younger patients with a normal bite, you are better off getting the chin itself moved forward...Known as a genioplasty.

Chin implant: You should never replace jaw surgery with chin surgery. You would get much better airway, profile with orthognathic surgery. Occasionally, teeth come together and the clinician gets fooled, thinking chin surgery is warranted. However, most of the times, patients need braces to re-align the teeth and then jaw surgery is performed.
