A member asked:

Is it possible to perform an operculectomy to remove gum tissue on impacted wisdom tooth if only a very small portion of the tooth is visible?

Wisdomteeth therapy: Wisdom teeth are usually never needed to have a great bite/smile. They are very helpful if 1st or 2nd molars have been lost previously. Pericornitis is the inflammation of that tissue over 3rd molars or lower wisdom teeth. The upper 3rd molar crushes this tissues against the lower one this leads to pain. Treatment is to have the dds smooth down the upper til the tissue heals. Then extract them.

Yes: Yes you can do that; however, if the wisdom tooth does not have enough room to fully erupt or is not erupting straight, then the wisdom tooth should be extracted.

Possible but...: It probably won't make any difference in your case. Almost the only time it's advantageous to do that is if the wisdom tooth is almost fully in and there is a small flap of tissue that becomes a problem. Have your dentist determine whether or not the wisdom tooth has sufficient room to erupt, is coming in straight, and whether it's better to remove or not in the long run.

Operculectomy: An operculectomy is ideal for a tooth that is fully rupted and the back half of the tooth still has a small flap covering it. If the tooth is not fully erupted but still impacted, then removal may be the treatment of choice. And dental exam should be requested to make sure the right treatment is done.
