Do dentists have to contact your doctor before giving the anesthetic?

No.: Generally not, but if you have a complex medical history, the dentist may want a clearance letter from your cardiologist, internist, etc. Prior to performing some procedures and/or sedation.

Dental anesthesia: General dentists can utilize local anesthesia without supervision. Some dentists gake additional training, such as oral surgeons, which includes months of training in anesthesiology. Oral surgeons give intravenous anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and manage the patient's airway skillfully. When Propofol is used for deeper anesthesia, an anesthesiologist is frequently involved.
