A member asked:

Is it dangerous to have a child when you have hsv-1 orally? i have had it since i was a child. people make me feel like i'm gross for having it...

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: Quite a number of people acquire hsv-1 and most do it as a kid. The recurrent cold sores are not a specific risk to a pregnancy but there are some cases where genital herpes can be due to the hsv-1 strain. Some assume that they are the same as the hsv-2 which is the predominant genital strain. Genital hsv does pose a risk for a newborn if the baby picks up the germ during delivery.
