The kidneys filter your blood loosing stuff you need to lose and retaining stuff your body needs to keep. Various disorders of kidney function allow more protein to be lost when they should be retained. The testing is there to quantify how much is loss. That allows the doc to quantify the amount lost and assist in deciding the cause and how to manage/treat it.

You have mild proteinuria which is confirmed by 24-hour urine collection for 2 times. Further work-up needs to be done for the etiology. Glomerulonephritis (acute or chronic) is the most common cause if urine dipstick test is positive for both protein and occult blood. You need to be evaluated by a nephrologist (specialist in kidney diseases) if you have not seen one. Take care and good luck.
