Your dentist has recommended root canal therapy for that tooth. Once the nerve tissue is compromised the tooth requires this therapy or it needs to be extracted. No other options. Get a second opinion if you need reassurance.

If the decay is deep and into the nerve than a root canal or extraction is indicated. If no sign of infection than an attempt to remove as much as possible of the decay without exposing the nerve could be attempted. A sedative lining is then placed over the remaining decay if any and a hope for repair to occur. If pain and or infection develops, than a root canal or extraction is indicated.

Your Dentist is giving you State-of-the-Art advice. If the nerve of the tooth has been compromised, the choices are Root Canal Treatment/Cap or Extraction?Implant/Cap. You may not agree, but your Dentist is correct.
