Pulp cap: The purpose of a pulp cap is to make the tooth less likely to be sensitive to the new filling, and to make the nerve less likely to need Root Canal Therapy.

Dentist says I have large cavity. Need pulp cap and filling. Decay is close to nerve but not on it. I am nervous about this procedure. Any advice?

Don't be nervous: Once you have the local anesthetic, you won't feel a thing regardless of what procedure your dentist needs to do. If the decay is as deep as you say, prepare for root canal therapy.
