A member asked:

Muscle biopsy of my arm says chronic denervation, and angular atrophic fibers. i have a herniated disc at c5-c6 compressing nerves and my doctor thinks that is the cause. i have no nerve pain, i only have chronic muscle cramping. is that possible?

By PubMed.gov: "Our data show that 60% of patients with muscle cramps who lack neuropathic complaints have small fiber neuropathy. You can google "cramp and small fiber neuropathy". I wonder what muscle of your arm the biopsy was taken so we can correlate with your radiculopathy.

Having trouble understanding why a muscle biopsy would be done if you indeed possess a "pinched nerve" in your neck, but gather that this may have been done due to cramping diffusely. An EMG study could objectify and precisely localize any muscles affected at C5-6. A surgical consult may be helpful. An opinion from a medical school based neuromuscular specialist could be of great value.
