A member asked:

I am having a transperineal prostate biopsy. the directions indicate that i should take a fleet enema the day before the biopsy. i live alone and it may be difficult for me to administer an enema to myself..can the biopsy take place without the enema?

Yes, enema needs to be done to clear up the rectum because the ultrasound probe has to be placed in the rectum for guiding the biopsy needle even with transperineal approach.

Fleets enema is very easy to self administer and your MD's office staff can teach you. It is needed for a finger or the ultrasound probe is placed in the rectum and if the rectum is not empty then things dont work out. dont be afraid- I am positive you will be able to do it. Good luck
