A member asked:

For a trus/prostate biopsy, do you prefer prescribing cipro (ciprofloxacin) alone, or with gentamicin? or, gentamicin with ceftriaxone? thank you...

Cipro (ciprofloxacin) alone: The most commonly used and recommended prophylactic antibiotic regimen for prostate biopsy is a fluoroquinolone (such as ciprofloxacin) alone, i.e. no aminoglycoside. See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21563156: "...there were no significant differences between several classes of antibiotics for the outcomes tested (bacteriuria, bacteremia, fever and the need for hospitalization)."
