A member asked:

How long does it take for a bladder to heal is biopsy if performed where there has been external beam radiation damage? ( treated for prostate cancer)

It Depends: The rate and extent of healing depend on the amount of radiation received, the time since radiation, the size of the wound, other medical problems a person may have and other factors. Generally, i would expect that a bladder biopsy after prostate cancer radiation would heal in a a week or two, but there is a small possibility of getting a long-lasting wound.

Today's EBRT: Should not cause much bladder injury, but older techniques or larger volumes for whatever reason can cause "hyperactive" bladder symptoms, and blood. A cysto might look and can appraise degree of injury visually. You need to discuss with the urologist and rad onc what's going to get better, and what is not.

Here are some...: Healing after tissue injury-intended or not- always leave a trace, i.e., scar with variable pace of maturation and adverse effects-though inconsequential most of times. Bladder mucosa resurfaces in 1-2 wks after biopsy with no discomfort; Radiation damage involves all the tissues on its path, is permanent, & takes forever to mature... More details? Ask the treating Doc timely...
