A member asked:

Is there any significance when the doctor only takes 12 samples when doing a prostate biopsy?

12 is enough: 12 cores are usually sufficient to sample the prostate gland. There is no particular significance to fewer than 12 or more than 12.

Here are some ...: Taking 12 pieces has been evolved and become the "standard" of prostate tissue optimal sampling to get a reasonable high yield for prostate cancer according to the accumulated experience. In my practice, I obtain 12 pieces if prostate volume is 35 cc. As a result, I've gained a rate of positive biopsy for P-Ca up to 59-60% in my patient population.
