Infections and inflammation in general can cause transient increase in platelets with many other causes possibly contributing. Does not sound that your platelets are significantly elevated to begin with, keeping the appointment with your PCP should give you peace of mind.

When was last dental check up and professional cleaning? Do you floss or WaterPik daily? Do you brush 2 full minutes twice a day? If not you may have periodontal (gum) disease which may manifest as a chronic low grade infection. Glad you are going to see your pcp to discuss lab tests. You should also be seeing your General Dentist for all of the above reasons and to evaluate your salivary glands.
