A member asked:

Good morning doctors. if i am ok with paying out of pocket, is it ever ok to have regular or deep gum scalings more often than every 3 months, or would this be too much? could this greater frequency damage my gums further?

Your dentist along with your dental hygienist would be best to weigh in based on current situation. Generally not needed providing good cleaning at home on a regular basis. The presence of medical comorbidities will have to be considered as well.

If you listen and follow the advice of your dentist and hygienist than every three months is all you need for treatment .When gums stop bleeding and pockets shrink and your on a maintenance program than they will determine your next visits. Your gums will not be damaged if you follow protocol.

You will need to discuss then physiologic reasons for or against additional treatment, Consultation with a specialist Periodontist may be in order.
