Noticed that my left palatopharyngeal arch is red, can see the veins, slightly more swollen than my right side. feels a bit irritated, too, but not terrible. i've never looked back there before - but can allergies cause this?

A pharyngitis caused by virus or bacteria is more likely than allergic pharyngitis. You can take tylenol or motrin as needed, symptoms should improve in 2-3 days. If pain gets worse or high fever, see a doctor for a throat swab and antibiotic.
