A member asked:

My dad who is 75 has psa of 5.9. he is going to have just a plain prostate ultrasound in a week. i am confused with all the different info about accuracy of psa test. some sites say 5.9 is normal range for a 75 yr old. other sites say different??

A doctor has provided 1 answer

PSA : The usual range of normal for a PSA is roughly 1-4. As men age the prostate enlarges and congestion can cause elevation of the PSA. A more meaningful use of the test is to recheck the value over time to see if it is increasing. A urologist should be involved in making this assessment to determine if more aggressive diagnostic procedures are needed.
