The ACL is the most common injured ligament but its injury should not affect the knee cap (patella). A loud pop or a "popping" sensation in the knee might be heard with the injury then pain, swollen knee, limited joint motion & knee instability in weight bearing are the common symptoms and signs of ACL injury. Patella dislocation is strongly suspected in your case, you should see an orthopedist.
