The knee is a complex joint which involves various tendons as well as cartilaginous pads and ligaments, so problems can arise from any of those or a combination. Since management will depend on the specific problem if this is a worsening you should consult an orthopedic specialist. A simple approach for now is to avoid the heavy walk for a while and see if it improves.

Since this problem developed from extensive walking an overuse condition could be the cause. Without damage to the knee joint overuse is a strong possibility. This could develop as a biomechanical problem with mal alignment of the knee joint. A podiatrist can help with a non surgical solution. Orthotics are sometimes required along with stretching and strengthening the muscles.
