A member asked:

I know a 18 year-old who has been in a spica cast from toes to armpits for four years now. i read online that spicas are usually worn by infants and only for a few months. what could possibly be causing his situation? i'm curious but ashamed to ask?

Kind concern: Spica casts function to immobilize the hips and upper legs in appropriate angles to allow healing of things like hip dysplasia, femur fractures or Hip fractures. Rarely, Spica casts have been used in Legg Calve Perthes disease where the head of the femur does not receive enough blood supply and begins to die at the hip joint.
