MRI's: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide very valuable information about one's anatomy & physiological processes. An MRI will not diagnose anything and everything under the sun. It is up to you whether you are willing to get an MRI or not. I suggest you educate yourself more before being swayed so much by your friend.

MRI brain: MRI's are critical in migraine workup as they can detect possible treatable causes for headaches, however they do not prevent strokes. Sorry to hear about your friend's story.

Misperceptions: You friend is misinformed to think a normal MRI done at some point in his life could "predict a stroke". In a similar normal belly study on a kids gut will not predict s/he would have appendicitis a year later. Such studies are helpful in finding out what is there at the moment the scan is done. It's a lot safer than exploratory surgery to look for a potential abnormality.
