A member asked:

The dentist said my 8 yr old has congenital missing lateral incisors, but i can see a tooth poking through the gum. is it possible the dentist was mistaken or that a different tooth is growing there?

Missing Laterals: Your dentist has most likely taken radiographs during your child's visit and after viewing the films it was determined that the laterals were missing. The tooth that you see poking through the gum is most likely the canine erupting in that space. A second opinion from another local dentist who can examine your child is in order if you are concerned there is a mistake.

Missing laterals: This is a common problem that Orthodontists treat every day. What your see erupting is most probably a canine, although 8 is early for upper canine eruption. Your child is a year overdue for his/her 1st Orthodontic Examination. The Orthodontist can then help manage eruption and tooth alignment for the best outcome. Please see a specialist Orthodontist for an Initial Examination (usually free) now.
