If the accident: was minor (not causing emergent hospitalization) then posterior headaches radiating in a band like nature around the head is common from "whiplash" type injury which strains the spinous process ligaments of the cervical spine with consequent muscle spasm. If he is otherwise acting normal without significant other neurologic symptoms then it is ok to wait especially if he did not strike his head.

The rear-ender can cause neck pain and stiffness, resulting in a secondary headache. It does not appear that he suffered a closed head injury, and therefore, would not have suffered a concussion. See no reason to prevent his sleeping. If headache worsens, confusion or dizziness ensues, would go to the urgent care center.
