Follow rec's: Do follow recommendations as Amoxi is commonly prescribed for dental infections and having adequate coverage. The surgeon is the only one who can tell you if there was significant infection at the time of surgery or the antibiotic was given as prophylaxis.

Depends: Prescription given is based on the clinical evaluation and judgement of the treating doctor. The described tooth is below the gum line and suggests that it is likely to be carious and infected. Depending on extent of infection, the type of infection, the surgeon will prescribe what he feel will help to clear the infection.

Questionable?: There is a debate over whether prophylactic antibiotic in the absence of indication (artificial joints ,devices etc) does more bad than good. For most cases, it is likely unneeded for routine oral surgery.

Antibiotics : It is a more invasive procedure to remove a tooth below the gum line. The surgeon must've seen signs of infection (which is common on a decayed tooth that fractured below the gingival level, if that is the case). The Amoxicillin dosage prescribed is very common based on infection, age, and weight of the patient and very effective in most cases.
