A member asked:

Does a screw retained dental implant crown need to be unscrewed each year for maintenance cleaning underneath it? if so, why would a patient want one?

Not necessary: Have been placing implants for over 25 years and see no need to unscrew anything unless something loosens. Then the screw is removed and a new one placed. But this rarely happens You unscrew only when there is a problem but I assure you it is so rare patients are so happy with their implants

Not so!: While it is true that a full arch prostheses, that replaces ones upper or lower natural teeth might need to be removed periodically to clean and replace screws (metal fatigue), screw retained single teeth implant crowns are mostly torqued down, access hole closed and than just treat it like a part of your natural dentition.

No: A routine cleaning twice a year should do the trick.

No: Best not to unscrew these unless absolutely necessary. Screw retained eliminate the question of which cement to use to allow retrievability , but keep it in place. They also allow easy removal as needed, and provide certainty that they are fully seated to place. Cemented crowns can cause tissue issues if all the cement is not COMPLETELY removed -a common problem. Good Luck.

Unnecessary : A screw-retained crown is a good option and can be removed periodically for hygiene maintenance as needed, but not each year.
