Time Line.: The nail plate is, in a way, a crude calendar of events regarding the history of the toe. That line, depending on it's position on the toe, indicates that something happened to influence the nail root. This typically is in the form of an injury. Understand that the injury doesn't necessarily have to be a traumatic event full of pomp and circumstance. It could be as subtle as a tight shoe.

Time lines: The young adult toenail grows out at about 1-2 mm/month. If you measure from the nail bed( near cuticle) out to the line, it will give you a timeline for when something disturbed the regular growth of the nail. It has no more significance than that.
