whenever i try to use the treadmill or go for a long walk i get hip pain. is this normal?

Pain is never: normal. I suspect that you have some form of degenerative musculo-skeletal disease, such as arthritis. But it could be something less common, such as tumor, so it would be best to get a medical evaluation. Try otc anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen to alleviate the pain.
