Not so simple: Exercising in the morning is best because You raise your metabolism and it stays raised throughout the morning and as you become more fit, into the afternoon. The amount of calories you burn depends on how fast you do the same distance. Running a mile in 15 minutes does not burn the same energy as running it in five minutes.

Rough(very): If you walk a mile it burns(very roughly) about 100 calories(could be a fair bit less). Loosely, it takes 3500 cals to "burn" a 1lb of fat. It would take about 525 miles to "burn" of this type of weight. That's assuming your dietary intake doesn't change at all; remember people who are active tend to eat more.
